4 key factors impacting the cost of a population health platform

“What’s that going to cost me?” It’s a familiar question to any sales professional—even more so when the product in question is a customizable, configurable population health/care management technology platform most often used in conjunction with multiple data integrations. In short, something that sounds really expensive.

Like many other Software-as-a-Service companies, Texture Health structures pricing into three categories: Implementation, Monthly Subscription, and Time & Materials, which encompasses anything beyond an agreed-upon standard scope. Below are the various factors we consider in structuring our proposals.

Key Question #1: What shape is your data in?

Think of a technology platform like a car. Putting messy, inaccurate data into your platform is like putting contaminated gasoline into your car—it may run for a bit but it’s only a matter of time until things become problematic, doing lasting damage in the process. Messy data adds layers of complexity to an implementation and is best dealt with on the front end. However, don’t let messy data deter you from undertaking a worthwhile project. Spending time on the front end with Texture Health’s data analysts taking you through unique identifiers, consistent processing, and data warehousing helps avoid this difficult scenario, giving care managers confidence that what they are seeing is accurate and can be leveraged to drive population health operations.

Key Question #2: Who are your partners in this?

Population health is a collaborative effort between multiple organizations, many of whom may not yet have any sort of common electronic medical record technology. Factors to discuss include population size, payer mix, demographics, and any past efforts to address challenges, either through automated or manual care management processes. Asking this question helps map out the ecosystem and understand quite a bit more about what implementation might look like from a model of care, workflow, training and data integration perspective. It’s also important to discuss which entities have access to what patient information.

Key Question #3: How defined are your best practices?

For example: How many different user roles will need to be created? What type of assessments, care plans, workflows, and task triggers will need to be built to support whole patient care (clinical, behavioral, and social determinants of health)? Key Question #4: What does success look like?

Asking this question helps us get a handle on what type of reporting will be required. Payers, ACOs, and other at-risk entities will all have their own reporting requirements, which are often cumbersome to generate and difficult to keep up with. ACOs in particular drown in reporting requirements. If we can a) make it efficient to pull these reports, and b) automate their submission at a cadence of your choosing, what kind of value does that generate for your organization? Texture Health invests time on the front end, even before an agreement is in place, to ensure that our technology helps optimize this process for our partners. Categories include care manager productivity reports, quality reports, and high-risk member reports.

How the Proposal is Structured

Pricing will ultimately reflect anticipated implementation costs, including data integrations, training complexity, and development time to customize our flexible technology stack to match the specifications uncovered during discovery. This is quoted as a one-time cost and thought of as the dollars associated with getting the client to first productive use or go-live.

We’ll also quote a monthly subscription cost based largely on population size. This covers the cost of ongoing operating costs, support, as well as utilization of patient engagement features like click-to-call functionality that may carry with them marginal incremental expenses.

Lastly, we’ll provide time and materials rates for future customizations beyond initial go-live, should an organization wish to take advantage of the platform’s features to launch additional population health initiatives.

Because population health is a broad mandate, it means different things to different leaders. Taking a step back to examine exactly what goals a potential partner wants to achieve is crucial to putting a pricing proposal together. Asking the right questions helps us both directly and indirectly gather information we know we will need to effectively understand and price the initiative.
